BitMEX to migrate data center, halting all crypto trading

Justin Nguyễn7/16/2025

For crypto derivatives exchanges like BitMEX, where every millisecond can impact trading outcomes, optimizing data infrastructure is a paramount task. Recently, BitMEX announced a major infrastructure migration plan aimed at enhancing the user experience and performance, especially for its user base in the Asian region.

According to an official blog post on July 16, the BitMEX platform will conduct a data center migration from its Amazon Web Services (AWS) facility in Dublin, Ireland, to the AWS facility in Tokyo, Japan.

1. Schedule and Affected Services

This critical migration is scheduled to take place on August 23, 2025, within the time window of 02:00 to 07:00 (UTC). For users in the United States, this corresponds to 10:00 PM ET (on August 22nd) to 3:00 AM ET (on August 23rd).

BitMEX emphasizes that during the migration window, all platform services will be temporarily unavailable. This includes:

 - The website and mobile applications.

 - All trading activities.

 - Deposit and withdrawal functions.

This is a comprehensive maintenance window, and users will be unable to access or perform any actions on the platform for the duration of the approximately five-hour period.

2. Recovery Process and User Guidance

To ensure stability after the migration is complete, BitMEX has outlined a clear recovery process. Immediately after the system comes back online, the platform will be placed in "cancel-only mode" for at least 15 minutes. This is a critical safety measure that allows traders to manage and cancel their open orders before the market resumes trading, helping to prevent chaotic price action. After this period, normal trading will be fully restored.

For users who trade via API, BitMEX has stated that the migration does not require them to change any connection settings. However, the exchange strongly recommends that users test their API integrations beforehand to ensure a smooth transition and avoid any trading interruptions.

The move to a Tokyo data center is seen as a strategic step by BitMEX to be closer to its large user base in Asia, which should significantly reduce latency and improve trading speeds for the region.
